Shirley Erena Murray writes song texts which bring to the fore issues few others dream of getting us to sing about in worship – thank God for her wisdom and her gifts.
Many folk know her excellent hymn A Place at the Table. The theme is inclusion – for everyone born, a place at the table….There are verses about men & women, young & old, just & unjust. The song appears in the hymnal, Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise, which is also known as Church of Scotland Hymnary, 4th edition. http://www.canterburypress.co.uk/books/9781853119002/hymns-of-glory-songs-of-praise
What I have just found out is that Shirley has written an additional verse, which appears in her newest song collection, For Everyone Born. She is happy for me to share the text here, which is ©1996,HopePublishing.
For gay and for straight, a place at the table,
a covenant shared, a welcoming space,
a rainbow of race and gender and colour,
for gay and for straight, the chalice of grace.
